single niche vs multi-niche blog: Which should you choose

Sharing is caring!

What should I blog about? Should you write about a single topic, multiple topics, or start different blogs for each of your interests? Choosing the topic(s) to cover in your blog is one of the first steps to take before starting a new blog or when thinking of taking your existing blog in a different direction. But should you choose a single niche blog or multi-niche blog? Which one is better?

In this post, we shall discuss single niche vs. multi-niche blogs and which one you should choose.

A word of warning though, since mine is a multi-topic blog, I will probably be biased, but let us discuss which is better between single niche and multi-niche blogs anyway.

In case you don’t know the meaning of niche blogging and multi-niche blogs, we will start by defining these two terms.

Single Niche vs. Multi-Niche Blog: Meaning

In blogging, the specific topic a blogger decides to write about in their blog posts is called the niche. So what is a niche blog, and how different is it from a multi-niche blog?

As the name suggests, a single niche blog focuses mainly on one topic with posts targeting a specific audience. If you decide to start a niche blog, it means that the posts you publish will be covering the subtopics of one main topic.

Some of the best blogging niches today include food, technology, personal finance, fitness, health and wellness, education, travel, and lifestyle.

On the other hand, a multi-niche blog deals with multiple topics. It is either run by one blogger or has various contributors covering specific topics.

A good example of a multiniche blog is this one. Aisles of Life covers a wide range of topics, from blogging tips to mental health, fitness, self-improvement tips, personal finance, careers, entertainment, travel, among many others.

Single Niche vs. Multi-Niche Blog: Comparison

  1. Profitability

It is no secret that niche blogs are more profitable than multiniche ones. Some of the reasons why single niche blogs are so successful are that they get more targeted ads, more organic traffic, and more returning visitors.

Niche blogs are also more profitable because they are more likely to get sponsorship opportunities.

For example, brands are more likely to partner with a single niche blog because they believe it is well-versed on a particular topic than one that creates posts about multiple topics.

This is not to say that multi-niche blogs can’t be successful. They can be just as profitable and sometimes earn even more than niche blogs. In fact, some of the most popular websites and online magazines were once small multi-niche blogs.

What determines how profitable your blog can be is the amount of traffic, quality of content, and the monetization strategies you have put in place.

For instance, for both single niche and multi-niche blogs you can make money blogging through ads, accepting sponsored content from brands and forums such as Intellifluence and GetBlogged, offering advertising space on your site, as well as through affiliate marketing programs such as AWIN.

  1. Authority

One of the pros of niche blogging is that it positions you as an authority in your chosen industry.

Readers are more likely to trust and follow the advice given by someone they believe has extensive knowledge on a particular topic, and this is why they might prefer niche blogs over multi-niche ones.

When choosing a topic for your niche blog, you most likely decided to be writing about a topic you are passionate about. And as you write more posts on its subtopics, you gain more confidence in covering this subject.

Another advantage of having a niche blog is that through all the research you do for every blog post, you will gain in-depth knowledge about your main topic. This then improves your skills and the quality of content you share with your readers.

You become an authority blogger in your niche, and readers trust your blog more, hence keep returning whenever they need a credible source of information.

With a multi-niche blog, however, unless you have different contributors writing about particular subjects, some readers might not believe that you are knowledgeable on so many topics, and may not trust the information you share.

  1. Ideas and motivation

While a niche blog is more profitable and enables you to learn a lot about your chosen topic, there is also the risk of running out of blogging ideas, or worse, becoming bored with your blog and quitting.

Since you cover variations of the same topics, having a single niche blog could also lead to the loss of blogging morale and motivation.

Having a single niche blog might be exciting at first with all the many subtopics to cover, but after a while, a single topic blog might become boring not only to you but also to your readers.

Your sources of inspiration for new blog post ideas might run out and you may experience writer’s block or lose interest in the topic you chose to cover. This is why many people who start a niche blog abandon their blogs after a few months or years, switch to a multi-niche blog, or create a new blog alongside their main one to cover their other topics of interest.

If you are considering starting a single niche blog, you should ask yourself whether you will still be interested in the subject you are considering one year or five years from now. If not, reconsider the topic or start a multi-niche blog.

One of the advantages of having a multi-niche blog is the wide variety of topics you can cover. It is also easy for this type of blog to adapt to changes in the world and your interests.

While it might not show your authority on some topics, having a multi-niche blog ensures you won’t get bored with blogging because you can cover diverse topics that interest you.

You also rarely experience writer’s block because there are many sources of inspiration for your next blog post.

  1. Traffic

Both single niche and multi-niche blogs have almost an equal chance of getting noticed on social media and the WordPress Reader.

However, when it comes to search engines, niche blogs have a higher likelihood of ranking on search engine result pages than multiniche ones when covering the same topic. And even when they both rank on the first page, readers are more likely to select the niche blog because they might think it is a more credible source and has high-quality content.

Nevertheless, a multi-niche blog could also attract more traffic than a single niche blog because it has a bigger audience.

Multi-niche blogs cover a wide variety of topics, and thus attract different types of readers and subscribers. Due to the multiple topics covered, some of your subscribers and followers who might not have thought to search about a particular topic on search engines could become interested and check out your blog posts on other subjects.

However, for both single niche and multi-niche blogs you still have to invest in your blog, optimize your content for search engines, and promote your posts on social media if you want more organic traffic for your blog.

Single Niche vs. Multi-Niche Blog: Which Should You Choose?

You now know the difference between a single niche blog and a multi-niche blog. But should you blog about a single topic, multiple topics, or start different blogs for different topics?

It is up to you to decide what type of blog you want. When choosing between a single niche blog and one that covers multiple topics, you must consider your reason for starting a blog, what you are passionate about, and your experience.

If you want to make money blogging, gain traffic, gain more knowledge, become an authority blogger in your industry, or if you are passionate about a specific topic, then a single niche blog is the way to go.

However, if you are not sure what to blog about, are passionate about various topics, or your main reason for starting a blog is not making money but simply to write and share your thoughts with the world, then a multi-niche blog is your best option.

When starting a new blog, writing about multiple topics can help you realize what you are most passionate about and what kind of content your audience loves reading the most.

If you want to, you can later change from a multi-niche blog to a single niche blog when you find the topic you love writing about the most and identify your target audience.

Even though niche blogs are the most recommended types of blogs, you have to remember that not all blogging niches are profitable.

So, if you decide to start a single niche blog mainly because you want to make money blogging, do a lot of research on the most profitable niches for blogging before choosing what you will be writing about.

Some of the most profitable blog niches in 2023 include technology, health, fitness, food, DIY, personal finance, and lifestyle.

Whether you decide to start a single niche blog or a multi-niche one, don’t forget that content is still king and distribution is queen.

If you want to build a successful blog, you have to create high-quality content that provides solutions to your readers and makes them want to subscribe or keep returning to your blog.

However, creating quality content is not enough. Utilize social media platforms and SEO strategies to increase your blog traffic.

  1. My blog is definitely a multi topic blog. My reason for this type of blog is exactly as you stated – I am passionate about various topics, and my main motivation is not to make money – but rather to write. Even so, I put so much time and effort into my blog posts (which I enjoy doing), that I would like others to read it. And possibly down the road, I would publish an ebook. Thanks for your interesting post. Everything I read rang true with me.
