Things to Remember When Going Through a Difficult Time

  1. Nothing is permanent, even problems

One of the hard truths about life we all have to accept is that everything ends eventually. Good times, bad times, neither of them are permanent.

The fact that change is inevitable and that you won’t feel like this or be in this bad situation forever are some things to remember when going through a difficult time.

Even though things may seem bleak right now, you can anticipate that the scales will tip in your favor at some point, and things will get better.

The concept of regression to the mean explains the impermanence of things in life and why the good and bad even out.

  1. You’ve had problems before, and you overcame them

None of us can go through life without ever experiencing challenges. How did you get through the tough times in your past?

Since you are here today and are probably experiencing a different problem than the ones in your past, you must have found a way to resolve your past issues.

When going through a difficult time, reminding yourself that you’ve had challenges in the past that you overcame will give you hope that you can overcome your current problems as well.

It could also inspire you to do the same things you did before to solve your issues.

  1. It is okay not to be okay

Although we are always encouraged to be positive and see the brighter side of things, sometimes this is just not possible. For instance, if you’re having a tough time because you are grieving a lost loved one.

The toxic positivity that is so prevalent today could make you feel shame or guilt for having negative emotions. However, one of the things you should remember when going through a difficult time is that it is okay not to be okay.

Even though you may try, no one can be happy and positive all the time. The negative emotions you experience are a natural reaction when things aren’t going well in your life, and you shouldn’t apologize, feel guilty, or be ashamed for having them.

Instead of faking happiness or bottling up your negative feelings, embrace your emotions and allow yourself to feel them. You can then find ways to cope and manage your emotions in order to heal and move forward with your life.

  1. You are strong enough to get through anything

One important thing to remember when going through a tough time is that you are bigger than your problems.

Do not allow what you are going through to weigh you down and make you feel lost, defeated, and overwhelmed. By doing so, you would be giving your problems too much power over you.

Take your control and power back by reminding yourself that you are strong enough to overcome the challenges.

You can build more self-confidence by using affirmations and mantras that remind you how strong and resilient you are.

  1. Everyone faces challenges

When going through a hard time, it is easy to think you are the only one facing hardships while others have it easy. You may even feel like the universe is against you or think you have bad luck.

One of the things to remember when going through a difficult time is that everybody struggles at some point – even the people who seem to have their sh*t together, have wealth, or have the happiest families.

Everyone is fighting their own battles. Knowing you are not the only one having problems in life can give you some comfort and hope, two things you need during tough times.

  1. Be kind to yourself

Many of us beat ourselves up when things aren’t going well in our lives. It is even worse if the situation you’re in right now is a result of your own actions.

Unfortunately, blaming yourself and wallowing in self-pity usually make finding solutions for your problems harder.

During hard times, it is important to remember to be kind to yourself. Forgive yourself and practice self-love and self-compassion in order to heal and move forward with your life.

  1. Tough times are a great opportunity to learn

You are probably not thinking of the positive side of your problems right now because you are so distracted by the suffering and pain you are in.

Even though it may seem impossible to do, one of the best things to remember when going through a difficult time is that this is an opportunity to learn.

When you reflect on your past problems, you will often realize that you learned something from those experiences. This time will be no different.

Learn everything you can during these tough times and use these lessons to either avoid ever going through that again or to cope with similar difficulties in the future.

The life lessons learned during difficult times will boost your personal growth and make you a better version of yourself.

  1. There is always something to be thankful for

Perhaps everything in your life seems like a mess right now, and you feel overwhelmed by all the negativity. But even when experiencing challenges, there are often still some things that are going well in your life that you might be taking for granted. You only need to look.

Spend some quiet time alone and reflect on your day or your entire life. Look for things you can celebrate and be thankful for.

The things to express gratitude for don’t even have to be big. It can be something as ‘small’ as being able to take a breath. Many people are dead or need assistance from machines to breathe, and here you are, doing it without difficulty.

When going through tough times, remember to look for big and small things to celebrate and be thankful for each day. Doing this will make you feel optimistic and help you change your way of thinking about your problems.

  1. Get out of your head

Sometimes things aren’t as bad as we make them out to be. And this is what often happens when we experience problems. We make mountains out of molehills by overthinking and obsessing about our problems and mistakes.

When going through a difficult time, it’s important to find ways to get out of your own head. Distract yourself by doing something you love, take a walk, or share your problems with someone to gain a different perspective.

These activities will help you stop the spiral of negative thoughts you may have while dwelling on your problems.

They will also prevent self-destructive behaviors, such as self-harm, substance abuse, self-sabotage, or emotional eating. Refuse to be the victim of your own mind.

  1. Many people are willing to help

Don’t suffer in silence!

One of the things to remember when going through a difficult time is that there are many people out there who are willing to help you if you ask for it (sometimes even if you don’t).

You only need to learn how to be more vulnerable with others and open up.

The first group of people you should turn to is your support system, made up of your loved ones. If you need professional help, you can consult a therapist or an expert in whatever other field you might be struggling in.

At other times, it can be easier to open up to strangers on the internet. There are a lot of people on social media who are willing to listen while you vent in order to help you understand your problems and provide solutions where possible.

If you look for them, there are plenty of people who are willing to help you when you are going through tough times. All you need to do is reach out to them without the fear of being judged.

Final Thoughts

And there you have them. The above are some things to remember when you are going through a difficult time. If you are currently in a bad situation, know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and you can reach it. You only need to keep going.

As Winston Churchill once said, ‘If you are going through hell, keep going’; that is how you get out on the other end.

If you are facing adversity and it seems like nothing is working out well for you, keep the above things in mind in order to remain hopeful and inspired to continue working to find solutions to your problems.

  1. It’s always good to have a reminder on how to get through a difficult time, through regaining perspective using the suggestions on your list. Getting out of your head is so important as is being kind to yourself. It takes time and we need to acknowledge that and thus take pressure off ourselves, and as the great prime minister said above “keep going!”

  3. A wonderful post, Sheri. ❤️ The most important one for me is to remember that it’s okay to not feel okay. We are often socialized to think there is something wrong with not being okay. This is not true. Being okay and not okay are both part of being a human being. Love this post!

    1. Thank you, Jeff!❤ I am really glad you loved the post. We all need to learn how to accept our negative emotions and deal with them instead of bottling them up or feeling bad for having them. Like you said, both types of emotions are part of being a human being.
