Time management is a useful skill for anyone in any profession, and bloggers are no exception. Since most people start a blog because they love writing, your love for the craft can take over your life, and you might find yourself doing things associated with your blog all the time, and it might even become an addiction.

When you are not writing, you are promoting your blog, engaging with fellow bloggers, or doing maintenance work on something or other on your blog; and you might still feel like you don’t have enough time to do all the blogging activities you would like to do.

Any form of addiction or obsession is not a good thing, even when it is to something you consider good like blogging. If you have been having trouble balancing your blog with your life, this post will provide you with tips on how to manage your time as a blogger.

Since this is something I also struggle to do, I am writing this as a personal reminder to manage my time whenever I feel like I am on my blog too much.

5 Ways to Manage Your Time as a Blogger

  1. Set blogging goals

Setting goals should be your first step when learning how to manage your time as a blogger.

Since every blogger starts their blog for different reasons, everyone has different goals for their blog. While some bloggers do it as a hobby, others make blogging their career and do it full-time.

Knowing what you want to achieve with your blog will give you something to focus on and guide your actions.

Some common blogging goals to set include the number of posts to publish per week, the number of words to write, growing your audience, learning new skills, pushing out meaningful content, and so on.

By knowing your blogging goals, you can then allocate the time to spend on each task to achieve them.

  1. Create a schedule for blogging activities and stick to it

As a blogger, you already know that blogging doesn’t only entail writing blog posts and publishing them.

If you want to learn how to manage your time as a blogger, you will also need to schedule time for the other activities that accompany blogging.

These other blogging activities include blog maintenance, internally linking and updating old posts, replying to comments, reading your emails, reading other bloggers’ content and engaging with it, promoting your blog on social media, pitching to brands, among many others.

When done haphazardly, all these activities can consume your entire day, thus it is vital to learn some blogging time management skills.

Creating a schedule for each blogging activity can be one way to start learning how to manage your time as a blogger. For instance, you could decide to reply to emails and comments twice a day, read and engage with other blogs at a fixed time, do blog maintenance weekly, schedule social media posts, and so on.

Turning off notifications can also help you manage your time as a blogger. It will eliminate the temptation to reply to emails and comments or read other bloggers’ content immediately after the notification pops up.

If you are a busy blogger, you can schedule time for blogging during your free hours. For example, in the morning before work/school, during lunch breaks, in the evening after school and work, or after your family goes to sleep.

  1. Plan ahead

If you usually post frequently, say daily or several times a week, planning for the topics you want to cover in the future will help you save and learn how to manage your time as a blogger.

Even though blog post ideas tend to crop up when you are nowhere near any writing materials, you can always take advantage of the ones you do have when near your phone, laptop, or notepad and write them down.

You will thank yourself later when you finally sit down to write because you will not have to waste time coming up with topics to cover as you will have many blog post topic ideas to choose from in your drafts.

Another useful time management tip for bloggers is to research the subtopics for your chosen topics earlier and note them down to make the writing process easier.

  1. Bulk-write blog posts and create social media content

This is one thing I need to become better at because I often find myself not doing it and then having to rush through writing my posts on the day or the night before publishing them.

Writing your blog posts in bulk has several other benefits besides helping you learn how to manage your time as a blogger.

For instance, bulk-writing your posts helps you build momentum and keep your creative juices flowing, enables you to create related posts that can easily be linked to each other, and it also ensures you have new content for your blog even when you are feeling unmotivated or too busy with other things to write.

Writing blog posts in bulk also removes the temptation to do unethical things such as stealing from other bloggers in order to have content to post on your blog.

Furthermore, since you don’t have to publish the posts immediately, by bulk writing your blog posts, you will have more time to correct any errors, add ideas and perfect your blog post before publishing it.

Writing blog posts in bulk is one of the most effective ways to manage your time if you are a busy blogger with other responsibilities like being a mom, work, or school.

You can designate a day in your busy schedule to bulk-write blog posts, preferably evergreen content, and create social media content, then schedule them to go out in the frequency you have set for your blog.

If you are a mom blogger, you can manage your time spent on blogging activities by getting as much writing done when your kids are sleeping or if you can afford to, invest in your blog by hiring a writer.

The best time to create blog content in bulk is when you are feeling motivated and most productive.

  1. Create work hours and take blogging breaks

If you are like me and always find yourself doing things related to your blog even when you should be engaging in other activities or spending time with friends and family, you should consider setting up work hours as a way to manage your time better as a blogger.

For instance, you could treat your blog like a 9-5 job and schedule all your blogging activities to fit in those hours. You could also avoid logging in to your blog on weekends to spend more time with family and friends or catch up with your chores.

Although it might not seem like it, a blog is a social media platform. And like any other social media platform, spending too much time on your blog and reading other bloggers’ content can affect your physical and mental health negatively.

You might find yourself working too much, staring at computer screens all day, comparing the engagement your blog gets with another blog, or being exposed to inappropriate or triggering content.

When learning how to manage your time as a blogger more effectively, consider taking breaks from your blog to regroup and prevent blogger burnout
